Easter Vigil - 2025

Annual Chrism Mass - 16th April 2025

Hundreds of people from the Diocese of Nottingham gathered at St Barnabas Cathedral for the annual Chrism Mass, celebrated by the Bishop of Nottingham. In celebration of the Jubilee Year, the Chrism Mass began with a fanfare of the ceremonial ram’s horns - shofars - heralding the arrival of the Jubilee Icon and Diocesan Cross. This powerful moment echoed the Book of Leviticus, which recounts God’s establishment of the first Jubilee Year.

The Chrism Mass is a celebration of the priesthood, during which all priests renew their commitment to their vocation in unity with the Bishop. It is also the occasion for the blessing of the holy oils - the Oil of the Sick, the Oil of Catechumens, and the consecration of the Sacred Chrism. The oils were presented to Bishop Patrick by representatives from the Diocesan Curia, the Diocesan Education Service, and the Diocesan Youth Service.
